Never happier than when in nature, Mark has always been a gardener. It runs in the family. His grandmother collected seeds from all over the world creating “great unreal gardens.” Determined and committed, Mark is proudest of “having gotten this far.” He is definitely living his dream of creating a sustainable farm and of beautifying the earth. He loves talking to people about gardening and is a firm believer in food security and people growing their own healthy food. Mark definitely ‘walks his talk’ raising his family of four in a 400 sq ft yurt and on only the healthiest organic food.

In addition to following his dreams, Mark is most proud of the uniqueness of his product, “Nobody else is building soil.”

He values the independence and the ability to work from home that come with owning your own business, and has found that meeting face-to-face and developing relationships with other surveyors have been his most successful marketing strategies. When not working, Brian can be found playing music, his other passion. His advice to other new business owners is to “take a course like Aspire to prepare yourself, and always persevere!”

As a new business owner Laurie has found her website to be the most useful tool in growing her business. “My website offers people the opportunity to look at my work at their leisure and call me when they are ready to place their custom order.” Working with other local retail stores has also been an important part of Stepping Out Designs success. “Building relationships with local businesses is very important to me. My work is made locally and sold locally at Beachcomber’s Hot tub store and Wind Song Gallery. I am always trying to create products that are unique and individual as not to compete with other artisans on the coast. I like to compliment other artists work as we all having something different to offer creatively.”

Laurie’s words of advice “I would encourage you not to give up your dream of starting your own business, it is so rewarding despite the hard work.” With all the hard work a little fun is needed. Laurie is happiest when she is outside, walking, hiking, biking, or out on the ocean, prawning, crabbing; and fishing, receiving a lot of inspiration for her work when out in nature.
